Jan / Johan van Galen (1604 -1653) was mortally wounded during the naval Battle of Livorno / Leghorn which took place on 4 March 1653 during the First Anglo-Dutch War, near Livorno, Italy. It was a victory of a Dutch fleet under Commodore Johan van Galen over an English squadron under Captain Henry Appleton. Added an engraved oval potrait of Jan van Galen by J. Houbraken. (Dordrecht, Amsterdam, Joannes van Braam, Gerard onder de Linden, 1724).Engraved plan of the trading post of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Hooghly in Bengal, with ships in the foreground and legend with names of the buildings, gardens, etc. Ca. 28 x 36,5 cm. From: François Valentijn. Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën. - Among other European powers that came to Hooghly were the Portuguese, the Danish, the British, the French, the Belgians and the Germans. Dutch traders centered their activities in the town Chuchura which is south of Hooghly. Chandannagar became the base of the French and the city remained under their control from 1816 to 1950. Similarly, the Danish establishment a settlement in Serampore (1755). All these towns are on the west bank of the Hooghly River and served as ports. Hr.Ms. FREGAT KONINGIN EMMA DER NEDERLANDEN. Hr.Ms. fregat Koningin Emma der Nederlanden, a fully rigged sailing ship (three-master) with steam power, of the Dutch navy. Original oval pen drawing, dated 1879, signed W.C.B. Ca. 7 x 15,5 cm. Fine image from the end of the sailing time, at the end of the 19th century when the propulsion of ships changed from sail to steam.The new steam propulsion was not yet so advanced that people dared to build pure steam ships. Hybrid ships were built so that people were not entirely dependent on the new technology. The Queen Emma had more than 300 crew members.See Alle Hens juni 1949, pag. 6-8 contains a fascinating account of one of the previous crew members. [Boeknr.: 35829 ]
