The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves such works to shed light on their historical context and to enable the study and evaluation of racism.This print depicts caricatured Black (African American) figures. On a moonlit night, a man wearing a nightshirt and carrying a shutgun runs with his dog from his shack door (at left) towards an eloping couple (at right) -- presumably to go after the young man who had persuaded his daughter to leave home. He is urged on by a woman (dressed in white nightgown and night cap) who leans out of one of the shack windows and holds a lit candle in her upraised right hand. At right, the couple are being tossed off their bucking donkey. On top of the roof, two black cats jump down the chimney. A rope ladder dangles from the open trap door in the roof. The full moon (upper right) is partly obscured by clouds. On a moonlit night, a young woman descends via a rope ladder from the trap door in the roof of a wooden shack. She steps onto the back of a young man,who cautions her (see caption imprinted in the bottom margin). The young man wears blue pants and his hat is on the ground beside him .They are unaware that around the corner of the shack, a man with a shotgun and a small dog peer out of the door. On the roof are two black cats (one of them is atop the chimney). To the right of the shack, a donkey stands ready to depart with the couple. The full moon (upper right) is partly obscured by clouds. With fine large cartouche, several cities coloured in red and the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (New Dutch Waterline ) is shown in blue. Ca. 124 x 193 cm. The first edition from a total of four editions, was published by Nicolas Visscher in 1696; this is the second, revised edition. - The rare wall map shows Utrecht in the centre, Amsterdam with the Haarlemmermeer in the northwest. In the north Naarden at the Zuiderzee (now Gooimeer) up to Schoonhoven, Nieuwpoort, Leerdam, Asperen and Heukelum in the south. It shows cities, villages and settlements and the differentiation of the land ownerships. The boundaries of the polders of the entire region with the designation of the owners are presented. Also depicted are drainage canals, windmills, landscape areas, ornamental gardens, as well as larger buildings and churches.The large Dutch wall maps are rare because most of the copies were used in their actual purpose to decorate the walls of the houses of the wealthy citizens. Those examples have not been preserved in most cases. This fine wall map is one of the most famous and spectacular graphic representations of the province of Utrecht, it was authoritative until the 19th century. [Boeknr.: 37139 ]

From: Histoire abrégée des Provinces Unies des Pays-Bas. - Decorative anonymous engraving published in anticipation of the Company's centenary in 1701, depicting the organization of the VOC with in the middle the council room with the seventeen directors, on the left side the six chambers (Amsterdam, Middelburg, Rotterdam, Delft, Hoorn, Enkhuizen) and on the right side the four councils, with letterpress. In 1602 the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was formed. It was the largest and most powerful trade and shipping company in the world. At its peak it had 40.000 Dutch, other European, and Asian employees, a fleet of more than one hundred ships, and over six hundred stations in its charter area, spanning from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan. Rare complete set depicting the shipwreck of the East-Indiaman Woestduyn, of the Amsterdam chamber of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) on the Noorderrassen sandbank off the Walcheren coast between Westkapelle and Zoutelande in 1779. Frans Naerebout and his older brother Jacob, who earned their living fishing and piloting, made two successful rescue attempts from Vlissingen. The first attempt took place during the night of Saturday 24 to Sunday 25 July and the second attempt took place on Sunday afternoon 25 July. The Naerebout brothers managed to save 87 of the 130 people on board, and about 15 people drowned. Virtually nothing of the cargo was recovered.
