HILL, S.S. Travels in the Sandwich and Society islands. London, Chapman and Hall, 1856.Sm.8vo. Modern half cloth. With folding map. XII,428 pp. First edition; with bookplate The Rodiek Collection of Hawaiiana. - An interesting travel narrative by an English gentleman-traveler, who devotes more than 300 pages of the text to his visit to Hawaii. He describes Honolulu, gives a general history of the islands since Captain Cook's time, and visits local sites of picturesque or historical interest. His travels around the island of Hawaii, however, are the most interesting portions of the text (Forbes III, 2175). Another part of the book covers his time in Tahiti, the Society Islands and Valparaiso. The appendix includes a transcription of the Hawaiian Declaration of Rights and an account by Robert McNally on the Schooner Amelia relating the murder of the first mate by three men.
