Scherm. 412; 426,(30) pp. First Dutch edition was published in 1657; first published in Spanish in 1605 - 1615 El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha. This Dutch edition has the newly made plates by L Scherm after the original plates by Jacobus Savry. It was the variety, the livelines, and the gibes at the famous, which won it instant fame. Its larger claims, the subdued pathos, its universal humanity, where slower to be appreciated. Don Quixote is one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times (Printing and the mind of man 111). All 17th and 18th century editions of the Don Quixote are very rare because they were almost always read to shreds (Muller). - Some stains otherwise a fine copy. Muller 73; Buisman 364.
