The Varna was chartered in Norway and this steamship departed on July 5, 1882. The expedition ship became stuck in the ice of the southwestern Kara Sea. The entire observation program was, out of necessity, carried out on the ice. The Varna was badly damaged and would sink in July 1883. After the ship sank, the entire team, 23 men, equipped with sleds and sloops, left for the south.
